What Is Plastic Waste?
Plastic waste is plastic material that no longer has use and is either thrown out in bins or scattered everywhere on our landscape and landfills. Plastic products range from things like containers and packaging (soft drink bottles, lids, shampoo bottles) to durable goods (think appliances, furniture and cars) and non-durable goods including things from a plastic party tray to medical devices.
Good news is most plastic materials are recyclable therefore do not need to end up in landfills. However, some plastic materials are not recyclable because they are either too expensive to recycle or don’t retain their original properties before they underwent the recycling process. Other complications such as the increasing number of additives used alter the strength, texture, flexibility, colour, resistance to microbes play a role in making some plastics less recyclable.
The Hazards of Plastic Waste Pollution
The concern of plastic pollutants is prominent in every corner of our lives. But the most that has gained traction is plastic pollution in aquatic environments. In aquatic environments, plastics pose both physical and chemical threats to wildlife and the marine ecosystem. Everyday there are reports of marine life washed ashore, tangled with plastic waste on their necks or their stomach. The reefs are also facing destruction due to plastic waste. Furthermore, the chemicals found in plastics that end up in seas releases chemicals that are harmful to both aquatic animals and plantations. According to the United Nations, almost 80% of marine debris is plastic.
Another major concern about plastics in the waste stream is the fact that they are not entirely biodegradable, therefore can stay as litter for the longest time. It is estimated that most plastics would take 500-1000 years to break down into organic components. Talk to us to help you manage your plastic in the most eco-friendly way. That way, you will rest assured with the satisfaction that you played your part in making the place a little greener and safer for generations to come.
The Process of Plastic Recycling
Plastic recycling is the process of recreating plastic waste and reprocessing it into new material and useful products. Though most of the plastic waste cannot be recycled, if we recycle those that can be reprocessed, the earth will be saved. The recycling process is as follows:
- Step 1: We’ll collect the plastic from your premises and transport it to the recycling centres.
- Step 2: During this step, the plastic waste will be separated into different categories such as bags, containers, pet bottles, as well as grades.
- Step 3: After, the plastic will be cut or shredded into small pieces .
- Step 4: The small pieces are carefully cleaned for removing any unwanted particles or dirt contaminants on them.
- Step 5: The cleaned pieces are dissolved or melted and then blown up to create new plastic materials.
Although plastic is a very useful material it can become waste right after use, and contaminate the environment if not managed properly.
