What is Glass Waste?

Glass waste is discarded glass. It comes in all kinds of forms. Some recyclable some not. The large amounts of glass waste result from the fact that uses of glass products have increased tremendously. Our drinks and water come in glass bottles, people are replacing their plastic containers with glass jars. Glass containers are aesthetically pleasing. But what happens when we discard them because we no longer have use for it? Without a proper glass waste solution in place, all this glass waste ends up in our landscapes and landfills.

The two most popular types of glass waste is coloured and colourless glass waste. The colourless glass waste is easily recyclables  while the coloured glasses have a low recycling rate. As a result, this type of glass waste tends to end up in landfill sites. However, since the glass is not biodegradable, landfills are not an environment-friendly solution. That is why here at Hereford we strive to send zero waste into landfills. We also strive to prove eco-friendly solutions.

Glass waste Recycling Hereford

For some items, there is often a finite number of times some waste can be recycled before they are unusable and have been disposed of in some other ways other than recycling. However, for glass materials, this is not the case. Glass can be recycled over and over without the risk of it losing its properties and qualities.

This makes it one of the best materials to use if you want to remain green. Proper usage of glass and proper management of glass waste helps promote sustainability and that includes glass recycling. The glass recycling steps are as follows:

We’ll collect the glass from your premises to deliver it to the recycling plants. All colors of glass are stored together so you do not have to worry about sorting your glass. Just do not store it with other waste as that may contaminate it. We will  carefully inspect for contamination and hazardous materials.

At the recycling centre, the recycling will begin with sorting out the glasses according to their grade. This will also filter out contaminants. Common contaminants include ceramics, Pyrex, aluminum cans, light bulbs, cardboard, window frames, and mirrors, plastic, food and oil. Anything that is not recyclable glass is called a contaminant and will need to be removed.

The glass will then be washed and crushed to create what is known as cullet where new glass material will be made from. This cullet comes in different sizes, from pebbles to sand and even powder. The cullet will then be melted to create new glass materials.

Recycling is one of the easiest ways for your business to play its role in combating greenhouse gases and make a positive impact on the world in which we live. At Hereford Waste, we can help you get there. Contact us today.
